Distinguished and Famous people from Walcha
🎨 Angus Nivison
Angus Nivison's paintings grow from a long familiarity with the Walcha landscape and life on a working property. Rather than simply reproducing a view, his abstract landscapes explore memory, weather, feeling and the cycles of life around him. Large sweeps of colour and darker passages can suggest the force of a place without spelling out every tree or paddock. He won the Wynne Prize in 2002, with works entering major public and private collections. Walcha remains the lived environment behind a career that has carried its influence into exhibitions well beyond the Northern Tablelands.
🪵 Stephen King
Stephen King approached Walcha council in 1996 with an offer to make a fountain sculpture for McHattan Park. The collaboration helped launch the public-art programme that became the Open Air Gallery, bringing sculpture into everyday streets and spaces. His work with timber and other materials also reached major outdoor exhibitions, including Sculpture by the Sea. In 2026 he received the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to sculpture. His influence is unusually easy to encounter locally: a walk through town brings the results of a farmer and artist's initiative into view.
🐎 Esther Stace
Esther Stace earned a place in equestrian history by clearing six feet six inches while riding sidesaddle at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in 1915. Her connection with Walcha is remembered in the district's account of notable local people and its riding history. Competing in a sidesaddle required a different balance and technique from the more familiar astride position, making the photograph of the jump especially striking. Stace's achievement gives the town a sporting story from an era when women faced considerable expectations about how they should dress and ride, even while attempting an imposing fence.
